About Ujjain & Omkareshwar
This sacred circuit in Madhya Pradesh unites two of the twelve Jyotirlingas — the most powerful manifestations of Lord Shiva — in a single, deeply moving pilgrimage. Ujjain, one of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) of Hinduism, is home to the Mahakaleshwar Temple: the only south-facing (Dakshinamurti) Jyotirlinga and the presiding deity of time itself. The Bhasma Aarti here — where the deity is worshipped with sacred ash at dawn — is unlike any ritual in India. Just 90 km away, the holy Narmada river cradles Omkareshwar, a small island whose very shape traces the sacred symbol ॐ. The Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga temple stands at the heart of this Om-shaped island, surrounded by the gentle murmur of the Narmada. Together, these two sacred shrines offer an experience of Shiva in his most profound forms — as the Lord of Time and as the Lord of Om.
